When you are designated with a project that requires change, the first action to undertake is to create your change coalition. Then, as Kurt Lewin (1947) posits, you proceed to the phases of leading change, which are: unfreeze, change and refreeze. Yet, in between the phases of unfreezing and changing, you will likely discover the opposing coalition. These are the individuals who desire to maintain the status quo. Every realist scholar will tell you—all human relations entail power dynamics and all human interaction is warfare. This is when leaders must turn to time-trusted war strategies.
